Champions League: Manchester City vs FC Basel – preview, team news
Manchester City come into their Champions League last 16 second leg against FC Basel with a handsome lead.
The runaway EPL leaders won 4-0 at St Jakob-Park in the first leg.
Three goals in nine first half minutes broke the back of a tie that always looked a mismatch on paper.
Ilkay Gundogan headed in the first, before Bernardo Silva chested, controlled and volleyed in the second.
Sergio Aguero popped up with the third and Gundogan added his second late on to effectively kill the tie.
Pep Guardiola’s men have since wrapped up the first domestic trophy of the English season, thrashing Arsenal 3-0 in the EFL Cup final at Wembley.
They then battered the same opponents by the same scoreline in the EPL, before playing Chelsea at the weekend.
Basel haven’t played a Swiss Super League game since 17 February.
Games against Zurich and Lausanne have been postponed on consecutive weekends since their 2-0 home defeat by St Gallen.
Raphael Wicky’s men are locked in second in the table, eight points above St Gallen in third and 11 adrift of Young Boys at the top.
They will have to pull off a continental miracle in the north west of England, then, to keep their excitement going this campaign.
But don’t bet on it – City should prove far too strong.
Manchester City team and injury news
Benjamin Mendy is a long-term crock, while Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho will likely not be risked.
Fabian Delph is back in contention after serving his three-game ban.
FC Basel team and injury news
Eder Balanta and Germano Vailati will undergo late fitness tests ahead of the tie.
Taulant Xhaka is suspended, with Raoul Petretta, Luca Zuffi and Renato Steffen all standing a chance of a recall.
